The Australian team has continued its disappointing run in One-Day Internationals. The Aussies have only won 3 out of their last 10 series in the last one year or so. They are currently ranked 6th in ICC ODI rankings and after the conclusion of the Test series that is again going against them, the hosts will play India in a 3-match ODI series later this month. Cricket Australia recently announced the squad and Shane Warne clearly disapproves of it.
They have selected a squad and have made drastic changes retaining just six players who played the previous ODI series against South Africa. The pace trio of Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins who played all the four Tests against the Indians have been rested keeping the World Cup in view. Among the batsmen, the big names in Travis Head, Chris Lynn, D’Arcy Short, Ben McDermot have been left out as they’ve been unreliable and inconsistent.
It also was an ODI recall for Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Marsh, Nathan Lyon and Peter Siddle. Lyon who impressed in the Test series against India will replace Aston Agar in the squad and will join Adam Zampa in the spin department. Meanwhile, Peter Siddle who played his last ODI in the year 2010 was recalled on the back of his improved performance in last few BBL seasons. Jason Behrendroff and Jhye Richardson have been rewarded for their performances. Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Billy Stanlake, Adam Zampa were the one who was retained.
Shane Warne criticises Australia’s team selection.
The former Australian bowler Shane Warne has criticised the Australian selectors for their decisions. Talking to Fox Sports the leg-spinner showed his disappointment after D’Arcy Short was left out of the squad. He added that Short can bat well in the top order and can bowl as well.
He insisted that the team should have been selected keeping in mind the conditions in England where the World Cup is going to take place this year. Warne showed his disappointment with Cricket Australia for the way they have treated Peter Handscomb. He also feels Chris Lynn should have retained his spot as he brings firepower at the top.
“When you’re picking this team you want to look at some players you are interested in, but you’ve also got to look at those players with the World Cup in mind and the conditions you’re going to have in England,” he said.
