India have had a decent run in the ongoing Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval. They currently have a cushion of 59 runs in the first innings with three wickets to pick. Their bowlers have been incredible, one of them is off-break bowler Ravi Ashwin. The veteran Tamil Nadu spinner has figures of 33-9-50-3. Apart from being frugal, he also has been amongst the wickets.
After Ishant Sharma nipped out Aaron Finch, Ashwin came to the party and got rid of Marcus Harris, Shaun Marsh followed by Usman Khawaja. Going ahead into the series, he is expected to play a crucial role for the visiting team. He is no mug with the bat either as he showed in the first innings, lending support to Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored a century.
In the meantime, former Indian cricketer and current commentator, Sunil Gavaskar is delighted with how Ashwin has bowled in the match. The 69-year-old also remarked that Ashwin has taken a leaf out of Aussie spinner, Nathan Lyon’s books.
Nobody was trying to attack him
“He certainly has picked up a thing or two from Nathan Lyon, there is nothing wrong from learning from the opposition if it’s going to help your own game. You don’t want to copy but you can take things and bring it to your own game when it certainly helps. This is wonderful bowling,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying in Sony Six.
“He did more than that [what Kohli could have asked from him] because he bowled really well. He concentrated on bowling the off-spinners more than the other variety he has. We saw a little bit of variety when Pat Cummins came into bat otherwise, he was bowling the stock ball all the time.
He was varying his speeds, flight but basically, he kept the pressure on the batsmen, didn’t give them anything. 3 for 50 of the number of overs he bowled just tells you how well he bowled. Nobody tried to attack him or nobody was trying to attack him when he tossed the ball up,” he added.
Lyon has bowled well in the match as well. The off-spinner dismissed Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant, both of whom tried to take him on. As the encounter progresses, the pitch is speculated to slow down and both Ashwin and Lyon’s performance would be pivotal to their teams’ chances of getting over the line.
