Australia vs India: Sunil Gavaskar utterly baffled with Virat Kohli's captaincy in the Perth Test
The fact is that the second new ball wasn't used as well as it should have been.
Former legendary cricketer and current commentator, Sunil Gavaskar expressed extreme disappointment about Virat Kohli’s captaincy in the second Test. Right from the team selection to bowling changes, there were some questionable choices that were made on Day 1. But, this also carried onto the second day as per Gavaskar.
The 69-year-old was left baffled and bewildered with Kohli’s tactics on the day. He questioned the Indian skipper not opening the bowling with Jasprit Bumrah. He said that Bumrah was the bowler who impressed the most on this pitch. But, Virat opening the bowling with Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami didn’t go well with the former opener.
Astonished, baffled not just surprised
“Astonished, baffled not just surprised. Baffled because the ball he bowled to Paine with the second new ball towards the end of yesterday’s play – pitching on a length, beating Paine and going over wicketkeeper Pant’s head when somebody is bowling that way. Why would you not give him the ball straight away at the start of the day’s play?,” Gavaskar told Sony Six during the lunch interval.
“He’s been your best bowler on this surface. Yes, there might have been others who would have got more wickets to show but you know who’s the man more likely to get you the wicket of Tim Paine in the morning,” Sunny further added.
Sunil Gavaskar also didn’t understand the Indian quicks opting to bowl short despite having enough lateral movement on offer.
“It was too short. If you’ve got 45 percent half-way down, the batsman is going to know he can leave it. Even if its bowled in the line, it’s going to miss the stumps on this Perth wicket. The fact is that the second new ball wasn’t used as well as it should have been,” a not so happy Gavaskar concluded.
