After losing the Test and ODI series against India, Australia have made a strong comeback against Sri Lanka, winning the first match of the two-Test series at The Gabba in Brisbane by an innings and 40 runs. The likes of Kurtis Patterson and Jhye Richardson made their Test debuts and didn’t let their team down by any stretch of the imagination. Pat Cummins was the Player of the Match.
The victory also means that Australia won’t be losing another home series. The second Test is scheduled to get underway on Friday, February 1 and the hosts would be looking to clean sweep their opponents and win their maiden international series since the ball-tampering scandal last year. In the meantime, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been included for the game at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
Marcus has been a consistent performer
“The National Selection Panel has made the decision to add Marcus Stoinis to the Test squad for the second match against Sri Lanka in Canberra. We made the decision to add Marcus to give us the flexibility to play an all-rounder in the event the conditions require an extra bowling option in the line- up,” Trevor Hohns, the national selector, was quoted as saying in cricket.com.au.
“Marcus has been a consistent performer this season, he has displayed strong all round form in first-class cricket and continued that form into the Australian ODI series against India,” he added.
Stoinis has been an integral member of the Australian limited-overs team ever since he made his debut in 2015 against England. The 29-year-old recently played against India and turned up with reasonable performances. Moreover, he has also been plying his trade for Melbourne Stars in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL). He is their leading run-scorer this season with 269 runs along with 10 wickets in seven matches.
