Australia will be lucky to have David Warner for the World Cup, says Shane Watson
Warner is currently in thunderous form, playing in the IPL.
Australia are the five-time winners of the World Cup and even the erstwhile edition went in their favour. Ahead of the upcoming edition of the 50-overs tournament in England and Wales, they are again expected to be a brute force, one of the reasons being David Warner’s presence. The experienced campaigner hasn’t played international cricket for quite some time.
Last year, he was found involved in the shambolic ball-tampering scandal owing to which he was suspended for a year along with Steve Smith. After his ban-period ended, he was drafted into the World Cup squad as well, despite missing out on a significant number of matches. Nevertheless, he has been in jaw-dropping form for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL).
It is not the first time that he is scoring consistently
In 10 matches, Warner has notched 574 runs at an average of 71.75 with a top score of 100 not out against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the RGI Stadium in Bangalore. In the meantime, Shane Watson, who’s currently plying his trade for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), reckons the Aussies are lucky to have Warner in the mix for the World Cup. He’s also awestruck by David’s consistency in the IPL.
“Australia will be very lucky to have him back into the team because he is a match-winner and a world-class batsman, one of the best in the world; he has the skills. In most IPLs, he scores a lot of runs. It is not the first time that he is scoring consistently. I don’t remember any tournament in the last four to five years where he hasn’t scored hell lot of runs,” Watson was quoted as saying in Sportstar.
As far as Watson is concerned, he hasn’t been in the best of form of late. After his Player of the Tournament show in the PSL 2019, he succumbed to quite a few failures in the IPL. Nevertheless, yesterday, the Queenslander churned out a match-winning hand of 96 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as the Chepauk.
