Australian cricket is currently in the doldrums after the shambolic ball-tampering scandal last year at the Newlands in March. The team, captained by Tim Paine, recently played the four-match Test series against India, which they lost 1-2. The hosts didn’t have the services of two of their stalwarts in David Warner and Steve Smith, who are serving a year-long ban from Cricket Australia (CA).
The home team lost the first Test at Adelaide Oval by 31 runs, but made a stupendous comeback at the new Perth Stadium, winning the match by 146 runs. However, they couldn’t continue with their winning momentum and lost the third Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground by 137 runs. The last Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) was drawn after rain played spoilsport in the last two days.
Warne calls for a few changes
Smith and Warner’s suspensions are set to end on the last week of March and their return is expected to give the side a massive boost. In the meantime, Michael Vaughan, the former English cricketer, mentioned that Warner and Smith’s return won’t solve all of Australia’s problems. Nevertheless, former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh disagreed and said the duo can make a huge difference.
In the meantime, Shane Warne, the legendary Aussie leg-break bowler and holders of numerous bowling records, echoed Vaughan’s words and feels that Australian cricket needs a complete overhaul. He said that from coaching to several programs, a number of issues need to be redressed provided the Australians want to change the face of their cricket that doesn’t look in good shape currently.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Unfortunately, I have to agree with @MichaelVaughan here Jnr. Yes, Warner & Smith will help, but Aust cricket needs a complete overhaul re the following. Coaching at all levels, the ridiculous under 23 programme, academy etc. As we are not producing quality smart cricketers-why ?,”
