Australian journalist charged $99,000 for a pint of beer at a Manchester hotel

The world of beverages, and that too alcoholic ones are quite an expansive one given the various types of beers, wines, whiskeys, rums and other options on offer. Not only there is a choice for types of drinks, but there is also a choice for the price of the drink as well, as it can range anywhere from cheap to uber expensive.

This has come to limelight as one Australian journalist was recently charged an eyewatering amount of $99,000 or 55,000 British pounds for a single bottle of beer which can only be termed as the most expensive beer in the whole history of beverages. This major expense has left Lalor with a huge hole in his pocket which happened due to a glitch in the machine while processing his payment for the said beer.

Australian cricket journalist Peter Lalor paid more than he bargained for when he ordered a bottle of Deuchars IPA at a Malmaison hotel in Manchester. In a series of tweets, Lalor explained how he managed to get his wife all tensed up about a $99,000 bill on his card payment that caused a huge problem in his mortgage.

“See this beer? That is the most expensive beer in history. I paid $99,983.64 for it in the Malmaison Hotel, Manchester the other night. Seriously,’’ he tweeted. “It’s a good beer. The original version of it won a heap of awards, including the Supreme Champion Beer of Britain, but if you are thinking that no beer is worth the best part of $100,000, then I am inclined to agree with you.”

As it seems, when the waiter came with the bill to Lalor, he didn’t have his reading glasses on him and didn’t think much of the machine glitch she talked about. He admitted that he asked her to process the card and mentioned that he didn’t want any receipts as well. However, when he asked how much he had paid for the beer, the waitress refused to tell him but admitted a mistake has been made and she would fix her.

“Then came the call from home. The sum of $99,983.64 had been removed from our account. And, there’d been a transaction fee of $2499.59 to add to the pain. The fee has been refunded but not the larger amount,” tweeted Lalor.

The spokesperson of the Malmaison hotel commented that they are conducting an inquiry into this matter and have apologized to Peter Lalor as well.
