Australia's new-found cult hero Mickey Edwards reveals a hilarious incident following his rise to fame

Australia’s newfound hero Mickey Edwards who made headlines on day five of the final Test against Pakistan at Sydney with his flowing blonde hair while fielding as a substitute revealed that despite his rise to fame within a blink of an eye his mother wasn’t impressed when he returned home. “She was like ‘well where have you been’ because I forgot to tell her I was doing it!” Edwards told 7News during an exclusive interaction.

Each and every time the blonde haired Edwards fielded the ball, the SCG crowd cheered with delight while the commentators speculated that the Aussies picked him somewhere from the crowd. “Nathan Lyon thought it was pretty funny to throw me the ball as much as he could because the crowd kept cheering whenever I got it”, he said.

“They were asking for a wave and I had to ask Peter Handscomb like what do you do? Do you wave back? What’s the protocol?”

Edwards revealed that he wasn’t expecting this opportunity and will cherish this moment for his lifetime because he might not get to don the Australian colours again. “It was pretty scary. I actually wasn’t expecting that at all. I was trying to palm it off the other bloke who was doing it (12th man duties) but he was like ‘you have a go’. It was like a dream come true. You’re never going to forget that. I’m going to take this all in because I might not get another chance to do it,” Edwards said.

Edwards revealed a funny reaction when he saw himself on the big screen at SCG. “‘Who is that big idiot with the long, stupid hair?'” he recalled saying to himself.

“I couldn’t believe it was me. I’ve never seen myself on TV. It was really cool. It sort of felt like a normal game but then I was like ‘there’s actually big crowd here’.”

“I actually thought it was going to rain all day so I thought I wasn’t going to be doing anything,” he said. “I’m happy to get a run around which was a bit of fun. Hopefully (I can) do it again soon. I’ve nicked the shirt as well. Hope they don’t notice.”

It was bound to be a big moment for Edwards as few days before he was watching the Boxing Day Test with his mates from the stand and here he was playing for his country.
