The second day of the 3rd Test between India and Sri Lanka at Pallekele saw a hell lot of cricketing action. It was a day marked by absolute Indian dominance which saw the hosts get crushed. While Hardik Pandya smashed a brilliant century and justified his selection in the team, spinner Kuldeep Yadav was equally brilliant capitalizing on the absence of the suspended Ravindra Jadeja.
It was another day of misery for the Sri Lankan batting line up as they found themselves with another follow on after getting bundled out for a mere 135 runs. Indian speedster Mohammed Shami was right on the money with his 140 plus deliveries as he removed both the Sri Lankan openers in their first inning. We not only saw a great bowling performance by the Bengal cricketer but he also gave us a moment to remember on the field.
The generous act:
During the Lions’ batting, Shami was guarding the ropes and was in desperate need of some fluid to deal with the scorching heat. Ishant Sharma who was in charge of the drinks at that time instructed a young ball boy to carry a bottle of fluid to Shami. As Shami was standing a fair distance away, the kid ran with the bottle and handed it over to the bowler. On receiving the bottle Mohammed Shami came up with a brilliant gesture and gave the ball boy a hug for his help.
Shami gave us a ‘spirit of the sport’ moment on the field and it deserves a lot of praise. Gestures like these from cricketers completely define the term ‘gentleman’s game’ which is used to refer to the beautiful game. However, the Indians finished the day on a high note with Sri Lanka following on. The Lankans are already a wicket down in their second inning with 19 runs on the board. They are still 333 runs short of the Indian first inning total, as India looks set for a 3rd win.
