As the ball-tampering scandal continues its unrelenting crackdown, head coach of the Australia cricket team Darren Lehmann has stepped down from his position. The 48-year old becomes the latest casualty in the scandal which has severely tainted Australian cricket and the careers of three prominent cricketers so far. Having been caught red-handed in the act, Lehmann has now become the latest to hand in his papers and leave yet another position on the team’s roster vacant.
The past week has indeed been a rough one for Australian cricket following the charges and an admission of guilt for ball-tampering during the course of the third Test match between the Proteas and the Aussies at Cape Town. The admission from then skipper Steve Smith sent shock waves around the world and especially in the cricketing fraternity.
However, in spite of all this, Lehmann has been perhaps one of the most impressive and successful coaches of Australian cricket having led the side to two Ashes series triumphs and a World Cup title in 2015. At the moment, Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie are the ones touted to take his place in the embers of the coaching staff, something that is indeed expected to be a welcome change for Australian cricket as a whole.
Family coped with a lot of criticism says, Lehmann,
Speaking at a press conference prior to the start of the fourth and final Test match at Johannesburg, Lehmann also said that he did not have any knowledge that his family had coped with a lot of critics following the infamous incident, something that may very well have prompted him to step down.
‘I had no prior knowledge. But my family has copped a lot of criticism and the time is right to step down,’ the Australian head coach was quoted as saying
