Bangladesh, led by new T20 captain Shakib al Hasan, will begin their Asia Cup 2022 campaign when they rub shoulders with the in-form Afghanistan side in Match 3 in Sharjah on August 30, 2022. The runners-up of the last two Asia Cup tournaments, in 2016 and 2018, Bangladesh, will be up against a dangerous-looking Afghanistan team which has already thrashed Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the opening fixture of the ongoing competition.

In 2016, when the Asia Cup was played in the T20 format for the first time, hosts Bangladesh reached the final, only to suffer a defeat from India, who clinched their sixth title back then. Two years later in 2018, both India and Bangladesh again met in the final in the UAE with the Bangla Tigers coming second-best for the second time running. Bangladesh and Afghanistan are yet to win this elusive trophy and both will be looking to end that drought this time around.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan have faced each other in eight T20 internationals so far with the Tigers winning just on three occasions and Afghanistan on five. At a neutral venue, both have clashed in three encounters with Afghanistan winning all three of them. In Asia Cups (ODI & T20), both teams have played in three games so far with Bangladesh winning just once and Afghanistan twice.

Experience Bangladeshi player Mahmudullah leads the batting chart in T20Is between the two sides. The right-handed batter has struck 169 runs followed by his teammate Mushfiqur Rahim (149) and Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi (141). Shakib is fourth on the list for scoring 137 runs in eight innings.

In terms of wickets, spin magician Rashid Khan is on the top of the chart for picking up 14 wickets at a stellar average of just 10.28 with an economy rate of 5.53 and best figures of 4/12. He is followed by Shakib who has taken ten wickets and another Afghani spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman who has seven wickets to his name.

The Bangla Tigers and Afghanistan last met in a T20 international in March this year in Mirpur in Bangladesh. The hosts batted first and managed to post only 115/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai took three wickets apiece to restrict the Tigers. In reply, Hazratullah Zazai and Usman Ghani scored 59 and 47 respectively as Afghanistan sealed a comfortable eight-wicket victory.
