Preview

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are all set to take part in the three-match ODI series. The first game is set to be played on Sunday, May 23 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. Going into the series, the Lankans have turmoil in their ranks.

They dropped Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, and Dinesh Chandimal after the Islanders were whitewashed 0-3 by the West Indies in the ODI series. Kusal Perera was then appointed as the skipper. The Tigers, on the other hand, returned winless from the tour of New Zealand and then lost a Test against the Lankans.

Moreover, Khaled Mahmud Sujon, who was appointed as the ‘team leader’ for the series, tested positive for COVID-19. But they would be relieved after Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman’s return from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Pitch Report

The pitch in Mirpur has generally been helpful for the slower bowlers and the batters have mostly found it tough to score runs. The average score is under 250 and an overly high-scoring match doesn’t seem to be on the cards.

Chasing under the lights should be the way forward. The conditions will be hot with the temperature around 37 degrees Celsius. There is a slight chance of a downpour.

Avg score: 243 (110 ODIs in Mirpur)

Record of chasing teams: Won – 59, Lost – 50, N/R – 1

Probable best batsman of the match

Shakib Al Hasan– Bangladesh

Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t played international cricket for three months and a lot of focus will be on him. Skipper Tamim has confirmed that he will be batting at number three. Against the Lankans, the Magura-born has decent records.

In 22 matches, he has scored 607 runs with six half-centuries to show for his efforts. He also has a couple of scores in the 40s and Bangladesh would be hoping for him to fire on all cylinders.

Probable best bowler of the match

Mustafizur Rahman– Bangladesh

Mustafizur Rahman, recently, had a reasonable campaign with the ball in hand for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). He has served his quarantine period and is all set to take the field. Against Sri Lanka, the left-armer has impressive numbers.

In nine games, he has picked up 15 wickets with best figures of 3/56 back in 2017. In the last four encounters, the seamer from Satkhira picked up two-wicket hauls every other time.

Today’s match prediction: Bangladesh to win the match.
