Bangladesh Cricket Board to extend Sunil Joshi's contract

Sunil Joshi was only offered a short-term contract by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). He was only hired for the 2-match Test series vs Australia. But now Bangladesh have decided to offer Joshi a contract extension after his impressive work with the team during the series. BCB made the decision following the team’s performance against Australia and recommendation of the senior players.

Impressive performance

Bangladesh registered their first ever win against Australia in Tests when they won the first match of the series. The spinners were the chief architects of the win, accounting for 19 wickets in the match. The former Indian left-arm spinner joined the coaching staff which consists of Chandika Hathurasinghe (chief coach) and Courtney Walsh (bowling coach).

Joshi said that he worked on the basics with the bowlers. He advised them to use their field well as it is an important part of spinner’s armoury.

“I worked on the basics and technical issues. I advised them on how to use the crease and explore various angles with the right field placements. Actually, field placements form an essential part of a spinner’s armoury and I am glad that Shakib and Mehdi were quick to understand my suggestions,” said Joshi as quoted by SportStarLive.com

Full of praise for Bangladeshi spinners

He seems to be very impressed by the Bangladesh spinners. He argued that Mehidy is as talented as any spinner at the age of 19. He was also full of praise for star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

“Mehdi has an amazing seam and wrist position. I have not seen a bowler so young (19) get such good drift with the ball. Shakib is an expert at varying the angle and length and his field positions can be stifling. The nuances I picked from (Bishan Singh) Bedi sir were passed on to these two spinners.” said Joshi

Talking about the celebrations

Joshi said that he found the celebrations incredible as the whole nation rejoiced in the win. He also believes that emergence of Bangladesh cricket is a welcome news for the Test cricket.

“The celebrations were incredible. The whole nation rejoiced in the win, which meant a lot of Bangladesh cricket. Believe me, Bangladesh batting Australia is a fantastic result for world cricket. I can say with assurance that Bangladesh cricket is on the right path and it will emerge as a strong Test nation in the times to come,” he said about the ceremonies.
