Bangladesh fan distributes sweets after Akbar Ali and Co’s U19 World Cup triumph
The Tigers skipper scored 43 and saw his team through to glory at the Senwes Park.
Bangladesh has managed to create history in the 2020 U19 World Cup in South Africa. The team, captained by Akbar Ali, came out trumps by three wickets in the final of the mega event against India at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. Prior to that, the Junior Tigers beat New Zealand in the semis at the same venue to book their place in the final of an ICC event for the maiden occasion.
The odds were against Bangladesh as India were the defending champions. However, after winning the toss and electing to field first, the Tigers came out firing on all cylinders. Their opening bowlers- Shoriful Islam and Avishek Das bowled with venom and didn’t let any loose deliveries. Das got the early wicket of Divyansh Saxena, but Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Verma took charge for India.
Jaiswal notched 88 while Varma scored in the 30s. But barring the duo, the Indian batting couldn’t put up any sort of fight. The Bangladesh fielders also put pressure on their opposition with some sharp piece of fielding. The Boys in Blue lost their last seven wickets, scoring around 20 in 45 balls. Due to the batting collapse, India were shot out for 177 runs inside the 50 overs.
Bangladesh storm to victory
In the run-chase, Tamim and Emon flung their bats around and took their team off to a fast start. However, Ravi Bishnoi wreaked havoc in their batting with four wickets in pretty quick succession. Moreover, Emon had to walk off after developing a cramp. It was then up to skipper Akbar to hold the innings together. Luckily, Emon came back and churned out 47 important runs.
Though he got out to Jaiswal while going for an expansive drive, Akbar scored 43 runs and took his team over the line. There was a rain interruption with Bangladesh needing 15 runs, but it didn’t hinder their progress. Rakibul Hasan chipped one over the 30-yard circle to hit the winning runs.
The victory came as a special one for the Tigers fans across the globe. They are celebrated the historic triumph at home. In a video doing the rounds on the social media platforms, a Bangladesh supporter was seen, distributing sweets to the people and to the Rickshaw drivers in the streets.
