For the longest part of Dinesh Karthik’s career, he had to stay in the shadow of MS Dhoni. But, there was a moment when he single-handedly pulled off an iconic win for India in early 2018. The match which we are talking about is the final of the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka.
India was up against Bangladesh in the T20I tri-series final in Colombo. Chasing a moderate total, the Indian team was in a bit of trouble. To sum it up, when Karthik walked into bat, the team still required 34 runs from two overs.
The Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman went on to play his most memorable knock in the Indian jersey. He scored 29 runs off just eight balls, helping India to win the trophy. In fact, the team needed five runs off the last ball. This is when Karthik smashed a superb six over the cover boundary.
The clip started doing rounds on Dinesh Karthik’s birthday
On Karthik’s 35th birthday, the memory of him hitting the last ball six surfaced once again on the internet. A fan club of Jasprit Bumrah on Instagram posted a hilarious video. The video shows a Bangladeshi fan reacting after Dinesh smashed the six off the last of the match. The fan can be seen furious with his team after they lost yet another close match against India.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Bangladesh team. The side, led by Shakib Al Hasan, had held their nerves and performed extremely well in the final. However, Rubel Hossain who bowled the 19th over went for 22 runs.
With only 12 runs to defend, Shakib handed over the ball to the young Soumya Sarkar. The part-timer had bowled an exceptional over until the last ball. But he missed the yorker and Karthik cashed in. Sarkar, along with many Bangladesh players, was seen crying and heartbroken after the match.
In fact, the man who led the Indian team in that match, Rohit Sharma also wished Karthik. In his wish on Instagram, Rohit thanked Karthik for his last-ball six. “Happy birthday Dk baba. Thanks for that last ball six,” wrote Rohit.
