Bangladeshi Test players like Mominul Haque, Soumya Sarkar, and Taskin Ahmed have been included in the Bangladesh A team which will take on Ireland A in a One Day and T2O series starting August 1. Mominul, a veteran of 26 Tests, will lead the Asian side in the One-Dayers while Sarkar, who has played in 10 Tests, will be the captain of the T20 series that will follow the 50-over series.

Mominul recently played in the two-match Test series in the Caribbeans but could manage just 16 runs in four innings. Sarkar, who has featured only in T20Is for Bangladesh this year, has also not been in the best of forms. He crossed 20 only once in eight matches after scoring a fifty against Sri Lanka in February.

Bangladesh’s chief selector Minhajul Abedin, a former national player, told Cricbuzz that the upcoming Ireland tour will help the three Test cricketers to strengthen their foundations in international cricket.

Taskin Ahmed makes a comeback after suffering a back injury

“Soumya is going through a lean patch but at the same time there is hardly any doubts as far as his talent is concerned, We just wanted to provide him a platform where he can express himself because that is all he needs,” he said about the T20I skipper of the Bangladesh A side.

“I think Mominul has got to have some practice in the 50-over format because we are going to have a lot of matches and all the spots in the national team batting line-up are yet to be filled in the shorter format,” the chief selector opined.

The focus is also on 23-year-old right-arm fast bowler Taskin Ahmed who is making a comeback after suffering a back injury. He was overlooked for the T20Is against Afghanistan and the series against the Windies because of his injury and rehabilitation. He has now been given a go-ahead by the doctors and the Ireland tour will be his first attempt to make a comeback in international cricket.

“He had a disc-related problem but has recovered sufficiently. We also wanted him to get back his rhythm as that is what he desperately needs,” Abedin said.

Ahmed last played in the Tests and ODIs in October last year while his latest appearance in the T20Is was in March this year.

The ODI series between Bangladesh A and Ireland A will be played in Wicklow between August 1 and 10 while the T20Is will be played in Dublin between August 13 and 17.
