After the first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka ended in a tame draw. Both the teams displayed their batting prowess as batsmen piled on the runs with very little on offer from the surface for the bowlers to create any impact. The hosts posted 513 runs on the board in the first innings, in reply Sri Lanka scored a mammoth 713/9 and declared the innings, in the third inning Bangladesh were 307/5 when the captains decided to shake hands.
The result has certainly not impressed the Bangladeshi selectors who have decided to shuffle the squad. The pitch in Chittagong for the first Test was the perfect example of a batsman’s paradise as the batters put on a dominant display in five days of a high-scoring Test match. In the 430 overs bowled an aggregate of 1533 runs were scored against just 24 wickets. Ahead of the second Test, the two players who have been axed from the team are Sunzamul Islam and Rubel Hossain.
For the Sri Lankans Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva’s partnership of 308 that ensured them a huge lead. It was Mominul Haque who scored twin tons in the single Test a total of 281 runs that stood out for the Bangladesh team.
The focus now shifts to Dhaka where the home side will see the return of the experienced middle-order batsman Sabbir Rahman in place of the Sunzamul Islam and Rubel Hossain.
Skipper Shakib to remain out of contention for the series
Furthermore, skipper Shakib Al Hasan will continue his time away and recover from the finger injury that he sustained during the recently concluded tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Mahmudullah will continue to lead the side in the absence of Shakib. It has been difficult for the Bangladesh management to replace Shakib, as the no one player can match his skills.
Rubel did not play in the drawn Test, while Sunzamul featured and finished with horrible figures of 1/153 after he had bowled 45 overs.
Bangladesh squad for the second Test:
Mahmudullah (C), Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das (wk), Mushfiqur Rahim, Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Mosaddek Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Kamrul Islam, Mehidy Hassan, Nayeem Hasan, Tanbir Hayder, Abdur Razzak, Sabbir Rahman.
