The 2022 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to start on January 21 with the final to take place on February 18. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) put forth the development on Wednesday, December 22. Last year, the tournament had to be shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic and instead, the inaugural Bangabandhu T20 Cup with local players took place.

The Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium are set to host the 40 matches in the upcoming tournament. 36 matches will take place in the championship in a round robin format followed by three playoff games and a final.

Six teams finalised for Bangladesh Premier League 2022

Earlier, it was learned that the BCB had finalised six teams for BPL 2022, namely Chattogram (Delta Sports Limited-Akhtar Group), Barishal (Fortune Shoes Limited), Dhaka (Rupa Fabrics Ltd & Marn Steel Ltd (Consortium), Cumilla (Comilla Legends Limited), Sylhet (Pragoti Green Auto Rice Mills Ltd) and Khulna (Mind Tree Ltd).

The players’ draft for the BPL 2022 is set to be held on Monday, December 27 at Radisson Blu Water Garden in Dhaka. Prior to that a franchise can rope in one local cricketer as a direct signing. All the other players need to be picked in the players’ draft. Moreover, a playing eleven will consist of only three overseas players instead of four.

The Bangladesh national cricketers, meanwhile, are expected to go on a break after their overseas Test series against New Zealand. Ismail Haider Mallick, the BPL governing council member secretary, said that the players will be compensated if they miss a match or two.

“We will talk with the franchises so that if they miss a couple of matches, they will be compensated and I don’t think it will be a problem,” Mallick was quoted as saying on Cricbuzz on Wednesday, December 22.
