Bangladesh v England ODI series – Combined XI

The unbeaten home run of Bangladesh ended after 6 series win. It was the new look England team that put the streak to standstill. However, point has been made – Bangladesh are no longer minnows in the game. The series started with a run fest as England posted a huge 309 on the board. Ben Stokes was the showstopper with a brilliant century. Jake Ball had a dream debut with a five wicket haul. The second ODI saw dramatic series of events. Bangladesh propelled to a total of 238 kudos to late hitting by skipper Masrafe Mortaza. England were never in the chase and fell short by 34 runs as Mortaza bagged a four-wicket haul. The on-field altercations between the players that took all the headlines only intensified the spirits before the decider. The stakes were high and so was the intensity in the final ODI. Bangladesh posted 277 on the board with Mushfiqur Rahim hitting an unbeaten 67. Half-centuries from Ben Duckett and Sam Billings helped England ease past the score and break the unbeaten home run of Bangladesh. The performers were many throughout the series. He was the top scorer, with 121 runs, in the warmup fixture and carried the same form in the first ODI too. He finished as the highest run-getter of the series, amassing 169 runs in three matches at an average of 56.33. He began the series with a wonderful century in a losing cause. He scored 112 off 119 balls but his efforts were not enough to his team through. In the second ODI, he could manage only 11 runs. In the third and the final match, he played a satisfying 46 run knock while putting up an 80 run opening wicket stand to give Bangladesh a good start in the decider game at Chittagong. He was drafted in the team in place of Jason Roy for the final ODI. Billings made the most out of the chance that he got. Billings hit a brilliant half century at the top order to set the platform for England’s run chase. He put on 60-plus stands with James Vince and Ben Duckett in the process. It was his maiden fifty. He departed on 62 that came off 69 balls. The knock was embellished with 4 fours and a six. The striking feature about the knock was that he never let the pressure creep up to his sleeve. He gets a rating of 8 for his confident run show. He had a disappointing 2nd ODI where he got a duck. However, the other 2 ODIs saw him hit brilliant half centuries. He hit 60 off 78 balls to announce his arrival in the series. His 68-ball 63 in the last ODI ensured that England were in command of the run chase in the deciding game. He amassed 123 runs at an average of 41 in the series. His strike rate of 119.83 was the best among all the batsmen in the series. He hit 13 fours, the most by any English players on the tour. Being the stand-in skipper, he did a magnificent job as captain. His decision making was spot and so was the field placing. Buttler’s 38-ball 63 with 4 sixes and 3 fours took England to 309 in the opening ODI. He continued his hard hitting spree in the second ODI as he staged a lone battle with a gutsy half century. In the final ODI too, he looked set to finish the game for his side but was unlucky to be dismissed towards the end of the game. Despite not scoring well in the 2 of the 3 matches, his knock in the 2nd match is enough to get him a place in the combined XI. In the series opener, he could manage only 25. His departure triggered a fatal collapse which resulted in Bangladesh losing the match narrowly. He bounced back really well with a well-compiled 75 to guide Bangladesh to a win. Stokes started off with a breathtaking 101 off just 100 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes. He got a crucial wicket in the 2nd match as he dismissed Shakib Al Hasan. In the final ODI, he remained unbeaten on 47 to see England seal the series. With 148 runs to his name at an average of 74 in 3 matches, Stokes was the leading run scorer for England in the series. He was next to only Imrul Kayes in the overall list of leading run scorers in the series. He also picked up 2 wickets at an economy of 5.18 in the series. However, he covered up for it in the final ODI with a fighting knock. It was his unbeaten 62 that gave Bangladesh a chance in the match. He top scored for Bangladesh and his knock came in just 67 balls. He was the 3rd leading run getter for Bangladesh with 100 runs to his name at an average of 50 and a strike rate close to 104. His keeping was decent too and Rahim was very much involved in the decision making with Mashrafe Mortaza throughout the series. Shakib Al Hasan Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan. (Photo credit -/AFP/Getty Images) Barring Imrul Kayes, who hit a wonderful ton, Shakib was Bangladesh’s only hope while chasing 310 in the 1st match. He wasn’t able to complete the task as the hosts crumbled badly towards the end but his knock stood out. He hit 79 off just 55 balls with 10 fours and a six. In the same game, he snapped impressive figures of 2/59 in the first innings. Though he couldn’t contribute significantly in the matches that followed, his impact on the series was made in the opening encounter. He bagged 3 wickets in 3 matches at an economy of 5.70. The skipper has to be commended for doing exceedingly well in leading the team. He backed up his players at crunch times. His all round performance helped Bangladesh level the series after the 2nd ODI. He struck a quick fire 44 on a track where most other batsmen struggled. He then backed it up with a 4-wicket haul to give Bangladesh a sniff at the series win. His strike rate with the bat was as high as 132.35. With the ball, he was Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in the series with 8 wickets to his name at an average of 16.50. He bowled at an average of 14.5 and an impressive strike rate of 17.4. He started the series with a four-wicket haul, 4/49, in the first ODI. He ended the series on a similar note with another 4 wicket haul. He scalped 4/43 as none of the Bangladesh batters felt at home when he was in the attack. Bowling in the batting friendly conditions, Jake Ball bowled really well to bag a match winning 5/51. He ripped apart the Bangladesh top order and then cleaned up the tail towards the end. Despite not being a success thereafter, he still gets a place in the combined XI. He picked up 2 wickets in the 2nd ODI and then went wicketless in the final one. He picked up 7 wickets at an average of 19.85 in 3 matches. He had the economy rate of 5.38 in the series. He looks like a very good prospect for England in the longer run.
