Bangladesh will host Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series, starting from May 23. All three games will take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The two sides haven’t done well in ODI cricket lately and would be raring to win this series. While Sri Lanka suffered a 0-3 whitewash against West Indies in their last ODI assignment earlier this year, Bangladesh met New Zealand in their previous ODI series where they also lost 0-3.

Hence, both sides have a point to prove, and it would be interesting to see how this series unfolds. Notably, Bangladesh flew to Sri Lanka last month for a two-match Test series, but they didn’t have a memorable outing. While the opening Test resulted in a draw, Sri Lanka walked away with a 209-run triumph in the second Test, winning the series 1-0. Although limited-overs cricket is a different ball game, the Test series triumph should instill confidence in the Sri Lankan team. However, Bangladesh have the home advantage this time around.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Team News

Sri Lanka have changed nine ODI captains in the last four years with Kusal Perera being the latest one at the helm. The wicketkeeper took over the leadership role from Dimuth Karunaratne ahead of the Bangladesh series, and it would be interesting to see how he performs. Moreover, veterans Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, and Lahiru Thirimanne have been dropped from this series, with Kusal Mendis assuming the role of vice-captain.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has named several fresh faces in the squad including Shiran Fernando, Chamika Karunaratne, and Binura Fernando. The side doesn’t look daunting on paper and hence, will start the series as underdogs. However, the likes of Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva have proved their mettle at the highest level and will be critical to Sri Lanka’s success.

On the other hand, Bangladesh welcomed back all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who both featured in the now-postponed Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Apart from the two, the home side also has skipper Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah, who all have been mainstays of Bangladesh’s batting line-up over the years.

In the bowling department, Mustafizur will join forces with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mohammad Saifuddin, and Taskin Ahmed. The side indeed looks well-balanced and would be raring to thrash Kusal Perera and Co. Earlier, Rubel Hossain and Hasan Mahmud were ruled out due to injuries.
