Bangladesh vs Windies: Fielding goof-up leaves hosts' players red-faced
The incident occurred in the 36th over of the run-chase.
Bangladesh were left a tad embarrassed after making a mess of a relatively easy fielding chance during the second ODI against Windies. The hosts had the chance to send back Roston Chase and pile more pressure on the visitors. The incident occurred in the 36th over of the run-chase. Mashrafe Mortaza bowled a fuller delivery to Chase which the latter pushed to the right of the bowler.
In a desperate attempt to stop the ball and not concede any single, Mortaza dived but ended up deflecting the ball to the mid-on. And as soon as the ball left Mortaza, Chase set off for a single. However, Shai Hope, standing on the other end, did not move from his crease as he did not want to take a risk at that crucial time. Consequently, Chase had no option but to return to his crease.
But in the meantime, Bangladesh had a glorious chance of making Chase pay. The fielder from mid-on quickly gathered the ball and threw it to the wicketkeeper. Chase was still a few good yards out when the ball reached Mushfiqur Rahim. However, Rahim made a heavy meal of the chance as he failed to collect and Chase made it to the crease safely.
Here is a clip of that incident:
Windies beat Bangladesh to level series
Chase, however, could not make full use of the reprieve and departed for just 9. But a stunning unbeaten century from Hope helped Windies beat Bangladesh by 4 wickets and level the three-match series. Batting first, Bangladesh scored a modest 255 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs. Tamim Iqbal, Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan scored fifties but neither of them could remain for long to guide their side to a big total.
In reply, Windies kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. However, Hope remained firm, holding one end and eventually scored 146 to guide his team to the victory at Sher-E-Bangla. He shared an unbeaten stand of 71 runs with Keemo Paul to take Windies home.
