After India, the Windies cricket team is set to tour Bangladesh next in their ongoing Asia tour but they will have to do it without their regular Test and ODI captain Jason Holder who has been ruled out with a shoulder injury. The 27-year-old all-rounder from Barbados couldn’t play the first Test in the series against India in Rajkot also because of injury but returned for the rest of the series.
As per Cricket West Indies (CWI) chief executive, Johnny Grave, Holder has a “partial thickness tear of his subscatularis tendon” for which he will have physiotherapy and strengthening work and will be re-examined after four weeks, ESPNcricinfo reported.
Windies not to risk Holder’s injury before WC
“The medical panel were concerned that if Jason was to bowl in Bangladesh, the partial tear may become a full tear which may involve the need for surgery and/or a significant break from cricket,” Grave told. “It was, therefore, then recommended for Jason not to travel to Bangladesh and instead undergo physiotherapy and rehab in Barbados.” The Windies will play two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is besides two tour games in Bangladesh on a tour that will last just over a month.
Holder said the injury has been troubling him since the World Cup qualifiers in March in which the Windies finished as the runners-up. He said it was disappointing to miss the Bangladesh tour but felt it was wise to accept the medical recommendation so that the damage is not aggravated. With the ICC World Cup also not too far away, the Windies will also be cautious when it comes to one of their frontline players.
Kraigg Brathwaite, Holder’s deputy who led the side in the Test in Rajkot, is likely to don the captain’s hat in the first two Tests against Bangladesh in Chittagong and Mirpur.
Holder has played 35 Tests, 85 ODIs and eight T20Is since February 2013 and scored over 3,000 runs and took 205 wickets.
