Bangladeshi female cricketer arrested for possessing drugs

The Chittagong police today arrested a 23-year-old Bangladeshi female Naznin Khan Mukta who was in possession of 14,000 yaba pills which is the local name for methamphetamine mixed with caffeine. She was arrested from Shah Amanat Bridge Golchattar area under Bakalia Police Station.

According to police, the arrestee hails from Trishal of Mymensingh, an Upazila of Mymensingh District in the Division of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. She identified herself as a cricketer who plays for Ansar team in the Dhaka Premier League (Women’s Cricket League) and is also a drop-out of Jagannath University’s (JnU) sociology department.

“Two or three years ago someone by that name played a match for our team,” Ansar and VDP Circle Adjutant (Sports Officer) Md Raihan Uddin Fakir claimed as per HT. He further added, “We had members receiving a subsidy at the time. But she was dismissed due to disciplinary reasons and because she attended practice irregularly. She has not been with us for some time. Ansar will not take responsibility for her personal actions.”

Caught her with 14,000 yaba pills

Pranab Chawdhury, the officer-in-charge at the station informed that upon receiving secret information, police searched a Dhaka-bound passenger bus of Green Line which was coming from Cox’s Bazar and detained the female at around 5:00 am this morning. “During our search, we caught her with 14,000 yaba pills she had kept in packets,” local police chief Pronob Chowdhury said.

After searching her luggage, police seized 14,000 yaba pills from her possession. The OC informed that one Mohammad Nahid used to supply contraband items to the cricketer after which she used to hand over the items to an associate named Ripon. Chowdhury said the Ansar VDP star would be charged with drug trafficking, an offence that can carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Cox’s Bazar borders Myanmar’s conflict-plagued Rakhine state, where authorities say methamphetamine labs produce tens of millions of yaba pills that are shipped to Bangladesh. Officials this month said drug traffickers had been more active since August when nearly 700,000 Rohingya refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar began pouring into Bangladesh. Authorities said last month that nine million yaba pills were seized in less than three months as the refugee influx reached its peak. Nearly two million were discovered in a single haul.
