The head coach versus captain dispute in the Indian dressing room is still fresh in every Indian cricket fan’s memory. Indian head coach Anil Kumble had to step down from his position as the players didn’t like his authoritarian attitude. Kumble was a hard taskmaster and was known to tolerate no nonsense, which was not to the liking of many Indian cricketers. A similar incident is currently taking place in the Bangladeshi cricket fraternity.
Bangladesh cricket has improved quite a lot in the recent few years and a lot of credits must be given to their head coach Chandika Hathurusingha. But very recently, the players have started to show disagreement with the plans and policies of the Sri Lankan. Just like Kumble, Chandika is also known to be authoritarian. He is involving himself a lot in team selection and other matters and is not hearing to anyone else’s opinion, which is not to the liking of many cricketers.
Four veteran players, with two board directors Akram Khan and Khaled Mahmud Shujon hence decided to move to move to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to demand the curbing of Hathurusingha’s powers. The players were left bewildered when Hathurusingha omitted Mominul Haque’s name from the squad list for the first Test match against Australia. Cheif selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu clearly stated that the selection committee had nothing to do with Mominul’s omission as it was a decision taken by the coach himself.
Papon will cut short the powers
However, after a lot of controversies, Mominul has been included in place of injured Mosaddek Hossain Saikat. The four senior players, along with Khan and Shujon, talked with BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon to express their strong dissatisfaction with the attitude of the head coach. After hearing the complaint, Papon has decided to accept the request of the players to curb Chandika’s powers so that the coach doesn’t feel that his opinion is consequential.
