Bangladesh’s Jahanara Alam single-handedly serving 50 underprivileged families
On her 27th birthday, she carried the groceries and other items and delivered them door-to-door.
Jahanara Alam, the Bangladesh women’s fast bowler, has been trying her hearts out to contribute towards the ones affected in the coronavirus pandemic. The speedster, who also turned 27 on April 1, has been serving 50 families in Dhaka, all by herself. Like the entire world, the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc even in Bangladesh, but it hasn’t dampened Jahanara’s spirit.
She carried the groceries and other items and delivered them door-to-door, making her birthday even more colourful. On being asked about the same, the 27-year-old sounded happy and said that it’s about drawing inspiration from each other in the situation of crisis.
I hope people get inspired by those who are coming forward: Jahanara Alam
“It’s not about showing off. But for one to get inspiration and enthusiasm from the other person. I’m in Dhaka and hence, have to work all by myself. Took me three days to get myself prepared. Today, almighty helped me to deliver the items,” Jahanara was quoted as saying in BDcrictime.
Jahanara feels for the ones, who have to tussle for food on a daily basis. The Khulna-born cricketer hence took the initiative and lent her helping hand.
“I hope people get inspired by those who are coming forward. If someone can support even one person, or one family, so be it. It’s because in a large part of our society, people fight for food. Even if they have lunch, there’s uncertainty over dinner. So, in this state, they can’t afford to stay in home quarantine,” she stated.
“First they need their daily food. So, it’s necessary to help them, delivering the goods to the doorsteps. It’s only then that they’ll stay out of danger at home,” Jahanara added.
Apart from Jahanara, a few of the other Bangladesh cricketers have also helped voluntarily in the dreadful situation. The likes of Mashrafe Mortaza and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat have taken responsibilities of quite a few families.
Shakib Al Hasan has also contributed through his foundation. Earlier, 27 Bangladesh cricketers also donated half of their cricket team’s salary with Tamim Iqbal contributing the highest. Around taka 26 lakhs have been collected after deducting the Value Added Tax (VAT).
