Batsman gets run out on the 3rd attempt in one ball in TNPL
Kovai batsmen attempted to run four runs off the last ball of the innings.
Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is in full swing these days as the second season of the tournament got underway on July 22. Defending champions Tuti Patriots collided against Dindigul Dragons in the season opener with the former winning the game by 7 runs. After a lot of clamour, outstation players were not allowed to take part in this year’s edition.
Full monty off the last ball
In a league game held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday between Lyca Kovai Kings and Chepauk Super Gillies, there was a funny incident that occurred on the final ball of the first innings. Kovai had won the toss and elected to bat and could finish at 146 for 8 after 20 overs. Siva Kumar faced the final ball bowled by left-arm spinner Sai Kishore but could only get a thick inner edge to get the ball towards the mid-wicket region.
Both batsmen – Siva Kumar and Deeban Lingesh – pillaged through to successfully complete two runs. The bowler did the tidying up as there wasn’t a short midwicket fielder in place and threw the ball back to the keeper but it hit the bat of Siva and traveled to the short fine leg fielder. Most batsmen do not run once the ball hits their bat but Siva attempted another run to which Deeban did not respond, maybe he didn’t want to go against the spirit of the game. Siva stopped and slipped to fall on the turf but the keeper missed the ball completely which prompted the batsmen to get another run, third off the same delivery.
Third time lucky for Chepauk
The ball traveled in the cover region and the fielder was slow to pick it up which prompted Siva to call Deeban for a fourth run but he was half way down the pitch till the bails were taken off at the non-striker’s end. It was a bit of ‘school cricket’ going out there in the middle.
Eventually, Chepauk secured an easy 6-wicket win as they chased down the target of 147 with an over to spare.
