10 Batsmen who got out handling the ball
10 Batsmen who got out handling the ball: No batsman who has ever played cricket or plays cricket likes to get out. Their wicket is perhaps the most prized possession for any player. It is definitely not a great feeling getting out. Things get worse when a player gets out in an unusual and unconventional way. One such unusual mode of dismissal is by handling the ball. Handled the ball is Law 33 in the laws of cricket established by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The law defines this mode of dismissal as a batsman can be given out if they intentionally touch the ball with a hand that is not holding their bat. The only exception is when the batsman touches the ball in order to save oneself from an injury.
In the history of the game in international cricket, there have been 10 such unfortunate batsmen (7 in Tests and 3 in ODIs) who have been given out for handling the ball:
1. Russell Endean (South Africa) v England in 1957:
Russell Endean was the first player in international cricket to be dismissed for handling the ball. South Africa was playing England at Cape Town. During the second innings of the match, Endean was facing Jim Laker. He padded away the ball and the ball looped off his pads into the air, and was moving towards the stumps. Endean pushed the ball away with his free hand before it could hit the stumps. After a lot of discussion between the umpires, he was adjudged out.
