Russell Endean was the first player in international cricket to be dismissed for handling the ball. South Africa was playing England at Cape Town. During the second innings of the match, Endean was facing Jim Laker. He padded away the ball and the ball looped off his pads into the air, and was moving towards the stumps. Endean pushed the ball away with his free hand before it could hit the stumps. After a lot of discussion between the umpires, he was adjudged out.

Aussie pacer Geoff Lawson, who later went on to coach Pakistan in 2007 t20 World Cup, was the bowler. Mohsin was on 58 when he defended the ball and the ball kept moving towards the stump. Following the dismissal, the crowd hurled stones at the Aussie players which caused some disruption before the crowd finally settled.

An year later, in 1983 in a Test match at Mumbai, West Indian legend who scored 18 Test centuries in his career, Desmond Haynes, was given out handling the ball when he was batting on 55. Graham Gooch, the English batsman with 67,057 runs across first-class and limited-overs games perhaps would have never thought that he would be dismissed in this manner. He was batting on 133 in a Test at Old Trafford when a Merv Hughes’ delivery came his way. He was good to defend the ball, but the ball kept moving towards the stump. This prompted the Englishman to punch the ball away. The Aussies appealed and Gooch was sent packing. This became the only instance when a batsman was given out for handling the ball after notching up a century.

Harbhajan Singh was at his peak best during this Australian tour to India. It was the Chennai Test where he added a little more salt to the wounds of Aussie skipper Steve Waugh who was hit on the pads by Harbhajan’s delivery. The umpire did not give him out leg before. But in the process, Waugh soon realised that the ball was rolling towards the stumps. He moved the ball away with his hands which prompted the Indians to appeal and he was given out then. Waugh was dismissed for 47.

<p>An year later, in 1983 in a Test match at Mumbai, West Indian legend who scored 18 Test centuries in his career, Desmond Haynes, was given out handling the ball when he was batting on 55. Kapil Dev was the bowler. Yet again, the ball was moving towards the stumps after hitting the pads of the batsman; Haynes knocked the ball away and was given out. Haynes refused to go and the umpires had to ask the bowler if he wanted to take his appeal back. Kapil Dev refused to do so and Haynes had to leave.</p>
<h4><strong>5. Mohinder Amarnath (India) v Australia in 1986</strong></h4>

<p>Amarnath became the first victim of the shrewd dismissal form in the ODIs. The match was at MCG and Amarnath was batting on 15. Off-spinner Greg Matthews bowled a turner which was moving towards the stump after it passed through Amarnath. Amarnath was quick to fiddle the ball away but in the process he was adjudged to be handling the ball.</p>
<h4><strong>6. Graham Gooch (England) v Australia in 1993</strong></h4>

<p>Graham Gooch, the English batsman with 67,057 runs across first-class and limited-overs games perhaps would have never thought that he would be dismissed in this manner. He was batting on 133 in a Test at Old Trafford when a Merv Hughes’ delivery came his way. He was good to defend the ball, but the ball kept moving towards the stump. This prompted the Englishman to punch the ball away. The Aussies appealed and Gooch was sent packing. This became the only instance when a batsman was given out for handling the ball after notching up a century.</p>
<h4><strong>7. Daryll Cullinan (South Africa) v West Indies in 1999:</strong></h4>

<p>The youngest South African player to score a first-class century, Daryll Cullinan, was facing West Indian spin bowler Keith Arthurton in an ODI at Durban. Cullinan played the ball and the ball hit the surface and looped back again when Cullinan caught the ball with his free hand. The ball wasn’t anywhere close to the stumps but the West Indian skipper, Brian Lara, appealed and the batsman was given out. He was dismissed for 46.</p>
<h4><strong>8. Steve Waugh (Australia) v India in 2001:</strong></h4>

<p>Harbhajan Singh was at his peak best during this Australian tour to India. It was the Chennai Test where he added a little more salt to the wounds of Aussie skipper Steve Waugh who was hit on the pads by Harbhajan’s delivery. The umpire did not give him out leg before. But in the process, Waugh soon realised that the ball was rolling towards the stumps. He moved the ball away with his hands which prompted the Indians to appeal and he was given out then. Waugh was dismissed for 47.</p>
<h4><strong>9. Michael Vaughan (England) v India in 2001:</strong></h4>

<p>Months later, in the same year, world cricket saw another similar dismissal in a Test match between India and England at Bangalore. Vaughan, who looked settled at the crease with 64 runs, was facing Sarandeep Singh. He swept the ball which didn’t hit his bat but took a slight knick on his pads. The ball rolled along the ground. It was certainly not going towards the stumps, but an instinctive Vaughan brushed the ball aside only to be given out handling the ball. But unlike other players who have got out to this method, Vaughan was sporting enough to later admit his mistake and quoted  &#8216;I got it all wrong, I&#8217;m an idiot.&#8217;</p>
<h4><strong>10. Chamu Chibhabha (Zimbabwe) v Afghanistan in 2015</strong></h4>

<p>Chamu Chibhabha became the latest victim of handling the ball in Afghanistan’s tour to Zimbabwe in October 2015. Chibhabha stepped away to cut left-arm spinner Amir Hamza, who had opened the bowling, but chopped the ball close to his stumps. He stuck his hand out to catch the ball, tossing it away, but wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad immediately appealed. Umpire Nigel Llong upheld the appeal, and Chibhabha became the first Zimbabwe batsman to be given out for handling the ball.</p>
