In a tournament like the Indian Premier League, some batters can completely change the game in very little time leaving no time for the opposition to recover from the assault. When any batter hits a century in a T20 innings, it makes it very easy for his team to get ahead in the game. In particular, if this ton comes at a very fast pace, then the probability of the team winning increases even more as there is a considerable shift in momentum.
Notably, the seventeenth edition of the cash-rich league began on Friday, March 22, 2024, with a clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and the star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai. In this article, we will be discussing the fastest centuries in the Indian Premier League's history so far.
Chris Gayle holds the record for smashing the fastest ton in the IPL. In an IPL 2013 game against the Pune Warriors, Gayle played a blistering knock of 175 runs off 66 balls. He hit 13 fours and 17 towering sixes in this memorable innings of his. The left-hander brought up the three-figure mark in only 30 balls during his superb knock. RCB posted a huge total of 263/5 in 20 overs with the help of Gayle’s century. The Pune team managed to crawl to a meagre 133/9 and lost the match by a whopping 130 runs.
Yusuf Pathan is at the top spot in this record as far as the Indian players are concerned. He smacked a ton in only 37 balls against Mumbai Indians in 2010, which was the fastest century at that time. Rajasthan Royals were chasing a big target of 213 runs in this game and were well and truly in the game until Yusuf got run out on the first ball of the 18th over. Rajasthan scored 208/7 in their 20 overs and lost the match by 4 runs.
David Miller scored a century in only 38 balls in his famous 101-run knock against RCB in IPL 2013. RCB had set a target of 191 runs against Punjab and were in the winning zone in the second innings as Punjab could manage only 64/4 in 9.5 overs. Miller played a blinder to help Punjab chase the challenging total in only 18 overs with 6 wickets to spare.
Adam Gilchrist struck a 42-ball century in the inaugural season of IPL. Deccan Chargers were chasing 155 runs in 20 overs against Mumbai Indians and Gilchrist won the game for his team in just 12 overs. DC won this match very comfortably by 10 wickets, with the then-skipper VVS Laxman chipping in with only 37 in a stand of 155.
Travis Head became the latest entrant in the list of fastest tons in the coveted tournament by breaching the three-figure landmark in just 39 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday, April 15, 2024. Head departed for 102 runs after facing 41 deliveries during his blistering stay at the crease.
Interestingly, the batting carnage has continued in the ongoing IPL 2024 with yet another explosive batter who got his name enlisted in the elite league of centurions. This time it was the English and RCb batter Will Jacks went bonkers as he hammered Gujarat Titans' Rashid Khan for 29 runs in the 16th over of the run chase with four maximums and a boundary. Consequently, the dashing batter galloped to the three figures in 41 balls to become the fifth fastest batter to score a century in the league's history.
AB de Villiers and David Warner are at the joint-seventh spot in this regard with hundreds in only 43 balls. The Proteas batter hit 129 runs off 52 balls against the Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016, which included 12 sixes and 10 fours. David Warner slammed 126 runs off only 59 balls in Hyderabad, including 10 fours and 8 sixes which helped SRH win by 48 runs against KKR in 2017.
