BBL 07, Match 29, Review: Hurricanes pull of a comfortable win against Brisbane Heat
D'Arcy led the way for his side once again.
Hobart Hurricanes defeated Brisbane Heat comfortably by six wickets in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) at Bellerive Oval. This was the fifth consecutive victory for the hosts as they are on a roll after losing the first couple of games at the start of the tournament. They are also at the third position now on the points table strengthening their claims for the knockout round. Heat, on the other hand, endured their fourth loss and are at the fifth position after eight matches despite having a healthy net run rate.
Brisbane Heat won the toss and opted to bat first on a decent pitch. Their skipper Brendon McCullum batted beautifully and scored 51 off just 38 deliveries as he was well supported by Joe Burns after the loss of an early wicket of Sam Heazlett. But once the partnership was broken they struggled to continue with the same momentum and lost wickets at the regular intervals. Jimmy Peirson and Ben Cutting though added some quick runs in the death overs as they posted 165 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.
Jofra Archer led the bowling attack once again and scalped a couple of wickets conceding 32 runs. The other bowlers also chipped in with a wicket each and kept Heat batsmen under the lid.
D’Arcy Short leads the chase
D’Arcy Short has been in some magnificent form in the tournament and he continued in the same vein despite losing his partner Alex Doolan in the very first over. Even the captain George Bailey struggled during his 21-ball stay in which he scored only 19. But Short kept on earning boundaries at the right time as he was joined by Daniel Christian. He blasted three sixes before getting dismissed on 23 off just 9 balls. Meanwhile, Short also notched up yet another half-century but was sent back in the 15th over by Mark Steketee.
But it was too late for the visitors as Ben McDermott had found his hitting his zone who also led Hurricanes to a handsome victory with 10 balls left in the innings. He remained unbeaten on 32 off only 19 cherries along with Matthew Wade who scored 11 runs. Apart from Yasir Shah, none of the bowlers looked menacing for Heat as they leaked runs constantly.
Hurricanes would love to continue the winning run until the end of the tournament even as Brisbane Heat are now almost in a must-win situation. They need to get things right in order to climb in the points table. Short was once again awarded Man of the Match for his brilliant knock with the bat.
