BBL 2018-19: Melbourne Renegades skipper Aaron Finch reprimanded for his behavior in the final
As Finch walked back to the pavilion, he banged one plastic chair on the way with his bat and hit it again when it bounced at him.
Melbourne Renegades captain Aaron Finch though had the last laugh in the final of the Big Bash League (BBL) 8 last Sunday as his team won an exciting game defeating Melbourne Stars, but he also had his share of trouble. He was caught hitting a plastic chair to vent his frustration after getting dismissed in the match played at the Docklands Cricket Stadium. He looked a candidate to get slapped with a hefty fine but eventually escaped it and was reprimanded for his behavior.
Finch, who failed to score many runs against India in his last international series, regained some touch in the BBL but was distraught with his run-out in the sixth over of the Renegades innings after Stars captain Glenn Maxwell put them into bat. The right-hand opening batsman could manage just 13 runs off 10 balls and got dismissed at the non-striker’s end after a shot from the batsman Cameron White hit the wickets after getting deflected off bowler Jackson Bird’s boot.
As Finch walked back to the pavilion, he banged one plastic chair on the way with his bat and hit it again when it bounced at him. Finch is set to captain Australia for a T20I and ODI series in India starting February 24 and he was lucky to have escaped a bigger punishment with his act. A serious consequence would also have put the Australians in trouble as they are already missing the services of two big names – Steve Smith and David Warner who are undergoing a ban ending next month.
“It just about sums up my summer,” Finch said of his dismissal as he celebrated the Renegades’ title triumph. The Renegades won the match and the title after making a miraculous return to the all Melbourne-final as the Stars looked favourites to win it at one time.
Stars had an incredible batting collapse to lose the game
Chasing 146 to win, the Stars were 93 for no loss but lost seven wickets for just 19 runs thereafter to eventually lose by 12 runs. Renegades’ Daniel Christian was adjudged the man of the match for his all-round show (38 not out and 2 wickets for 33).
“It’s a tough one. You’re looking to score, you’re looking to rotate the strike early but it happens. I felt like I was hitting the ball really nicely … just not for long enough.”
