There is no dearth of entertainment for a cricket fan when he is in attendance at the stadium, soaking in the atmosphere as the players enthrall him with their deeds on the field. And, the ‘entertainment’ quotient is more in a T20 game, where the fortunes can change in a jiffy, and the game is fast, quick, and exhilarating.
And needless to say, the audience plays a huge role in lifting the entire mood of a game. And on a few occasions, they can even hog the limelight as well. One such incident happened on January 2nd, 2021, in the game between Hobart Hurricanes and the Melbourne Stars in the 23rd match of the Big Bash League.
Off the 4th delivery of the 16th over bowled by Lance Morris, Hurricanes’ batsman Dawid Malan smashed the delivery through the leg side. The ball sailed over the fine leg fielder’s head, and a man in the crowd attempted to catch the ball. Funnily, not only did he drop it, but he also managed to deflect the ball inside a cup of beer that another man next to him was drinking.
The commentators couldn’t control their laughter as the man drank his beer along with the ball inside his cup. He initially even refused to give the ball back, but later obliged. But by that time, the umpires had already decided to replace the white ball. One of the commentators on air even joked “It’s a good catch if he has caught it in the cup.”
Dawid Malan’s knock was special for the Hurricanes
As far as the match is concerned, Dawid Malan was the wrecker-in-chief for the Hobart Hurricanes. The England left-hander was at his best as he top-scored with a 56 ball 75 to help his side put up a competitive total of 164 runs on the board. In reply, the Melbourne Stars could only manage to score 143 runs in their allotted 20 overs.
Glenn Maxwell’s valiant 37-ball 70 went in vain as the Hobart Hurricanes beat their opposition by a margin of 21 runs. At the time of writing, the Hobart Hurricanes are comfortably placed in second place, with five wins from 7 games. As far as the Melbourne Stars are concerned, they are occupying fifth place, with 2 wins from 6 games.
The Melbourne Stars and the Hobart Hurricanes will square off against each other one more time, on January 4th 2021, at The Gabba, in Brisbane.
