Hobart Hurricanes pulled off a thrilling 21-run victory against Melbourne Stars to climb up to No.2 in the points table. Dawid Malan’s 56-ball 75 was the major contribution during Hurricanes’ innings which lacked acceleration. They finished with 164/5 in their 20 overs and came back to take out Stars’ top three inside six overs. However, an aggressive knock from Glenn Maxwell (70 off 37) put the visitors on the top as he added 72 runs for the 4th wicket in only 7 overs with Nicholas Pooran. Both the set batters fell in the space of three balls as the Stars fell apart and could only score 31 runs in the last 7.2 overs.
Here are all the statistical highlights from Hobart Hurricanes’ thrilling win during HUR vs STA match:
A rare win for the Hurricanes against the Stars:
5 – HUR vs STA game is only the 5th in the BBL where Hobart Hurricanes defeated Melbourne Stars. The Saturday’s win was the first for Hurricanes against the Stars after three successive defeats. Stars defeated Hurricanes twice during the 2019-20 season and also in the playoff game of the 2018-19 edition.
A tight spell by Ellis:
11 – Nathan Ellis conceded 11 runs in his four overs during the Saturday’s fixture; the joint fewest runs conceded by any bowler in a T20 match at the Bellerive Oval. Chris Tremain also gave away only 11 runs during the 2015-16 season game for Melbourne Renegades against the Hurricanes.
Overall, Ellis is one of the four bowlers to concede as few as 11 runs in a BBL match for Hobart Hurricanes after bowling four overs. Ben Hilfenhaus (vs Scorchers in 2011-12) and Riley Meredith (vs Sixers in 2019-20) conceded exactly 10 runs in their four overs while Jake Reed (vs Thunder in 2014-15) had figures of 4/11 in his four overs.
Maxwell’s record treble:
3 – Glenn Maxwell became the first player in the Big Bash League with the treble of scoring 50+ runs, picking up 1+ wickets and taking 1+ catches in a match. He went past D’Arcy Short (2) who is the only other player with this treble more than once in the League history.
Overall, this was the 7th instance of Maxwell scoring 50+ runs and claiming at least one wicket in the same Big Bash League game. No other player in the history of BBL has affected this double more than four times.
Maxwell’s lone effort:
70 – Glenn Maxwell’s 70 is the 3rd highest individual score in a completed BBL inning where no other batsman scored more than 15 runs. Michael Klinger scored 81 for the Perth Scorchers where Ian Bell’s 14 was 2nd best during the 2016-17 season game against Brisbane Heat. Earlier in 2015-16 season, Chris Lynn scored an unbeaten 75 for Brisbane Heat where Jimmy Pierson’s 10 was the 2nd highest in the game against Perth Scorchers.
Milestone game for Hurricanes’ players:
50 – The duo of Ben McDermott and D’Arcy Short completed 50 appearances in the Big Bash League for the Hobart Hurricanes. Only George Bailey (72) and Clive Rose (53) have played 50+ BBL games for the Hurricanes before McDermott and Short.
