BBL 2021-22: 12 members of Brisbane Heat test positive for COVID-19, fixture against Sixers gets postponed

Right after the first wave of COVID-19, the cricket world started to manage the fixtures inside closed bio-secure bubbles and with utmost precautions. However, the third wave of the severe virus has already kicked in and it has now affected the ongoing BBL fixtures too. In the latest turn of events, 12 people of the Brisbane Heat contingent have tested positive for COVID-19 and the fixture between Heat and Sydney Sixers is being called off.

Right after the latest turn of COVID-19 RT PCR testing, it was reported that 12 results returned positive and the club would not be able to field their player for the upcoming game. The club is still confidential about whether they will field their players against Melbourne Renegades for the next game.

The Heat are expected to take a charter flight from Gold Coast on January 06 containing remaining players, coaches, and local players eligible for replacement. All seven Game and two Game Gold coast members will be refunded fully for this game and as per the statements by Queensland CEO, a team will be in contact with all the people through an email for refunds.

“I know it is disappointing for the players, coaches, and staff that were all supportive of trying to stage the game as normal. The fans and supporters will be equally saddened that the squad has been affected in this manner and that tonight’s game can’t take place. We are working hard now to finalise preparations for the next week for the squad, including those who are currently isolating or ill, and to secure a playing group to compete in matches in that time frame,” said Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson in a statement by Heat’s official website.

“We will provide whatever support is needed for those players and staff who will be in isolation for seven days. Again, I’d like to thank the medical and off-field teams at both Queensland Cricket and Cricket Australia for their ongoing guidance and support,” the statement added.
