BBL 2021-22: Melbourne Stars sign Joe Burns ahead of the season
Joe Burns ends ties with Brisbane Heat after nine seasons.
The upcoming cricket calendar is flooded with T20 matches, and fans must brace themselves to witness some exciting action in the shortest format. After the second half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and T20 World Cup, the focus will be shifted to the 11th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). The Australia-based competition will get underway on December 5 while the final encounter is scheduled to take place on January 28.
Melbourne Stars, one of the eight BBL franchises, have made a major announcement ahead of the season. On August 3 (Tuesday), the side revealed the signing of dashing batter Joe Burns. The 31-year-old was associated with Brisbane Heats for the last nine seasons. He also enjoyed an impressive run with the franchise, scoring 1192 runs with a strike rate of 123.52 in 59 BBL matches.
However, the Australian international wasn’t anywhere near his A-game in the last season. Burns scored 180 runs in 12 games with his average and strike rate being just over 20 and 120 respectively. Subsequently, Brisbane Heats and Burns’ ties were ended and Melbourne Stars bagged his services. The veteran opener has signed a contract until the end of the 2023-24 season.
It was obviously a difficult decision leaving Brisbane Heat: Joe Burns
Speaking of his decision, Burns reckoned it was a difficult call but he’s determined to do well with his new team. “It was obviously a difficult decision leaving the Heat after being there for so long, however, I am ready for a new challenge at the Stars,” Burns said as quoted by Melbourne Stars.
“The Melbourne Stars have been a very strong team over the years and I’m excited to join the team and I can’t wait to get stuck into training with my new teammates,” he added.
Melbourne Stars head coach David Hussey is also delighted with Burns’ addition. The former Australian all-rounder reckoned that the 31-year-old will provide experience and depth to the batting line-up. “We are excited to welcome Joe to our squad for the next three seasons, especially given the experience and batting depth he adds to the squad,” Hussey said.
Meanwhile, the BBL title is still elusive for the Stars. They advanced to the finals as many as three times but failed to cross the final hurdle on every occasion. Hence, they would be determined to end their drought in BBL 2021-22.
