England batter Liam Livingstone will represent the Melbourne Renegades in the 12th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) after the franchise made their first pick in the inaugural draft on August 28 (Sunday).
Apart from Livingstone, Rashid Khan, Trent Boult and Shadab Khan were the other international stars who were picked among 24 overseas players. Rashid was eventually picked by the Melbourne Stars but Adelaide Strikers retained the star spinner as he is set to represent the franchise for the sixth successive season.
After missing out to pick Rashid, the Stars eventually named the Kiwi pacer Boult as their first pick. Some other prominent players picked in the first round included the likes of Sam Billings (Brisbane Heat), Chris Jordan (Sydney Sixers), David Willey (Sydney Thunder), and Shadab Khan (Hobart Hurricanes), while Perth Scorchers ‘passed’ on their round one selection.
In other rounds, several other prominent players, including Joe Clarke (Stars), Alex Hales (Thunder), Tymal Mills (Scorchers), and James Vince (Sixers) were bagged by their existing clubs, while English batter Laurie Evans returned to the Perth Scorchers as a ‘retention’. Among other BBL regular players, Colin Munro (Heat), Phil Salt (Scorchers), and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Renegades) will play for a new franchise this year.
Delighted to welcome the world’s biggest names to the competition: Alistair Dobson
“The inaugural BBL Draft was a resounding success and the perfect way to begin the countdown to the summer of Big Bash,” Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said. “The League is delighted to welcome a host of the world’s biggest names to the competition, complemented by the next group up and comers.”
The 12th edition of the BBL is slated to start on December 13 (Tuesday), with the first match to be played between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars at the Manuka Oval. The final match of the tournament will be played on February 4, 2023.
