Another exciting Big Bash League (BBL) season culminated on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, as Brisbane Heat pipped Sydney Sixers in the summit clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground by 54 runs.
This is only the second time Brisbane managed to win the coveted title. Their first triumph came way back in the 2012-13 season when they bettered Perth Scorchers in the final. The Heat finished runner-up in 2022-23 as the Scorchers won the title for the second consecutive season. However, under the inspirational leadership of 24-year-old Nathan McSweeney, Brisbane have managed to end their title drought BBL 2023–2024 Award-Winners List
Josh Brown was in decent tough throughout the campaign, but he saved his best for the business end of the tournament. The 30-year-old scored an incredible 57-ball 140 in the Challenger in Queensland against the Adelaide Strikers to take his team to the final.
In the title decider, Brown scored 53 of 38 balls and emerged as the highest run-getter in the encounter. The right-hander finished second on the list of top run-getters in the tournament, amassing 366 runs from nine innings at an average of 40.67 and a strike rate of 150.62. Meanwhile, Matthew Short finished as the top run-getter, scoring 541 runs from 11 innings.
There's a famous saying that batters win matches while bowlers win tournaments. Brisbane's seam-bowling duo of Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson finished at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively on the list of leading wicket-takers. Bartlett picked up 20 wickets in 11 games at an average of 14.70, while Johnson bagged 19 wickets in as many games at 14.47.
Brisbane dominated the tournament, finishing on top of the points table after the round-robin phase, with 16 points from 10 games.
The Scorchers are still the most successful team in the competition, with five titles in their trophy cabinet. Meanwhile, Sydney Sixers have emerged victorious on three occasions. Brisbane are now third on the list with two wins. Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Renegades, and Adelaide Strikers have won the prestigious title once each. Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars are yet to win the competition.
