Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has finally appointed the new head coach of the national team which is playing the T20I series in India against Afghanistan. Courtney Walsh was at the helm on a temporary basis after Chandika Hathurusingha unexpectedly resigned from the position eight months ago. However, the team has struggled since then and the BCB president had pointed out the same after losing the series recently against Afghanistan,
Mohammad Isam, the Bangladesh correspondent of ESPN Cricinfo, confirmed the news of the appointment of Steve Rhodes as the coach of Bangladesh until the World T20 in 2020 on his official Twitter handle. Interestingly, he has been named at the helm only after the day the BCB President Nazmul Hasan had stressed that they will not finalise the coach in a hurry. Rhodes was reportedly recommended by Gary Kirsten who worked for them on a short-term basis to help them recruit the new coach.
Who is Rhodes?
Steve Rhodes is the former England cricketer who has played 11 Tests and 9 ODIs for his country. But he has a wealth of experience playing in the domestic arena. He played a massive 440 first-class matches for Worcestershire and went on to amass 14389 runs with 12 centuries and 72 half-centuries. The 53-year-old also played 447 list-A matches during his career.
He was in charge of the Worcestershire since 2006 and was only sacked last year by the County. He was also relieved of his duties as the head coach of England just before the U19 World Cup after it emerged that he had failed to report the arrest of a young all-rounder – Alex Hepburn in time. He was made an England scout recently and is known mostly for his talent-spotting skills. The 53-year-old will be looking forward towards the new challenge as he will have to get the best out of a team which was doing well and has suffered a slump in the last few months.
