BCB likely to host tri-series against Australia and England ahead of T20 World Cup 2021
The teams are keeping in mind the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place later this year in India.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia’s tour of Bangladesh for a Test series, which were a part of the World Test Championship, had to be postponed. However, later this year, the Aussies are set for the tour, this time for T20Is in a bid to prepare for the most-awaited T20 World Cup scheduled to take place later this year.
The previous edition of the World Cup in 2020 couldn’t take place due to the pandemic. The tournament in Australia has been pushed to 2022. As per the Future Tours Programme (FTP), Bangladesh will also be hosting England for a few limited-overs fixtures before the T20 World Cup on Indian soil.
Bangladesh’s Test against Australia cancelled
Hence, as per reports in ESPNcricinfo, there’s a possibility that the Tigers might even play a triangular series with the Aussies and the Three Lions. It has also been learned that the postponed Test series last year won’t be happening as it couldn’t be rescheduled during the rest of the window for the championship.
The Aussies would be going 10 months without playing a single Test. After their recent series against India that they lost 1-2, they are next scheduled to play a one-off Test against Afghanistan before the Ashes against England gets underway. Australia also pulled out from their tour of South Africa, citing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.
As far as Bangladesh are concerned, international cricket returned to their country after a gap of nearly a year. West Indies played an ODI series that the hosts won 3-0. The two teams are currently taking part in a two-match Test series. The Caribbean team has already taken a 1-0 lead with a win at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
Kyle Mayers scored a magnificent double century in the fourth innings, helping the Caribbean team to the Test highest run-chase in Asia. The second Test will be getting underway on Thursday, February 11 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur Dhaka.
Going into the Test, the Tigers have been jolted with a couple of body blows. Shakib Al Hasan and Shadman Islam won’t be a part of the game due to injuries. Soumya Sarkar has replaced Shakib for the final Test.
