One of the best all-rounders in the world at the moment, Shakib Al Hasan recently opened up on the challenges he would have to face as the captain of Bangladesh in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. Shakib has already led the country across formats in past, however, the upcoming challenge is not going to be easier in any way.
Bangladesh have appointed Sridharan Sriram as their new head coach for the T20I side until the T20 World Cup in Australia and it will be interesting to see how he collaborates with Shakib who also has loads of experience under his belt. Bangladesh haven’t had the best of results in recent times and lost both the T20I and ODI series against Zimbabwe. The injury to Liton Das hasn’t helped them either while the regular names haven’t had a lot of game time coming into the tournament.
The board felt that I was the best option available: Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib mentioned that the BCB president Nazmul Hassan has always kept him under pressure to produce results and felt that the leadership is a challenging position. He wondered if the reason behind his appointment was about him being the best option available at the moment.
“One of the things is that Papon bhai keeps me under pressure.”
“So there is some chance of pressure being there. Since it’s a challenging position and the board felt that I was the best option available, maybe that’s why they chose me,” Shakib was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
Talking about his mental state over leading the side, Shakib was unsure of the answer and he concluded that the plans would be made alongside the new head coach.
“Difficult question to answer and I don’t know how eager I was to do it [captaincy] but right now I’m very motivated. These plans are made by the coach and captain together. Since we have someone new in charge, these plans would be made with him,” he added
Bangladesh will play their first game on August 30 against Afghanistan in a Group B fixture of the Asia Cup 2022.
