India rallied their way into their second World Cup final but fell agonizingly short by just 9 runs from getting their hands on the elusive trophy. The Mithali Raj unit was bowled out for 219 after being in a winning position with 14 required off the last three overs. But they lost three wickets in 7 balls for 1 run to concede the game to England at the Lord’s Stadium in London.

Recognition for women cricketers

A number of stars have emerged out of this World Cup. Unheralded names like Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma, Ekta Bisht, Veda Krishnamurthy, Smriti Mandhana and Rajeshwari Gayakwad have now become household names following their outstanding showings in the 8-team event. India did exceedingly well to win their first four games on the bounce but stuttered to lose their next two. Like a resurgent unit, they bounced back to win against the Kiwis to get a place in the semifinals. Harmanpreet’s razing innings of 171* in the semifinals helped India brush aside the defending champions to get a place in the finals.

Playing against the hosts, India did well to restrict England to 228 for 7 after 50 overs. They put up a brave show after being reduced to 43 for 2 after 12 overs by England to take the game deep. In the end, they probably panicked with victory in sight and squandered the game to England. Despite the loss, the Women in Blue received a lot of credit and respect for their outstanding World Cup campaign.
