After the COVID-19 hit the world in 2020, the cricketing schedule around the world got disturbed in unimaginable ways and India’s domestic season had to bear the severe brunt as well. However, in the latest turn of events, it has been reported that BCCI has begun to hand over players their longstanding match fees for the 2020-21 season.

As per the latest reports, the regular domestic players recognized by associations, both male and female, have begun to get 50% compensation of their regular earnings. Though the majority of players have begun to receive their monetary benefits, many of them will face a delay due to procedural issues from their associations’ end.

Ranji Trophy was canceled for the first time in 85 years

It has to be noted that the Ranji Trophy for the senior men’s category was canceled for the first time in the history of 85 years due to COVID-19. On the other hand, the T20 tournament for women was also cancelled due to the severity of the second COVID-19 wave. The payment process is in line and it is being worked on by a seven-member team led by Mohammad Azharuddin.

Understanding in terms of compensation, a player who played eight Ranji games in the 2019-20 season, received INR 11.20 lacs, the match fees being INR 35,000 per day in the four-day event. However, as per the current compensation system, the same player will receive around INR 5.1 lacs.

For a player who didn’t make it to the playing XI in the 2019-20 season for certain games, would also be compensated on a pro-rata basis. The player will get 50% match fees for the four games and the rest 50% of the corresponding fees for players outside playing XI for the rest of the fixtures.

The clearing of longstanding fees also clashed with the beginning of the new Ranji Trophy season which will commence from January 13 and will take place till March 17. The games will take across seven venues but a final word and fixtures are yet to be announced and they maybe rescheduled again due to rising cases of COVID-19 in the country.
