BCCI, CA and CSA decide to scrap off CLT20: A day after two IPL teams Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were banned for 2 years by the Justice Lodha committee, there is another big decision coming from the BCCI. The Board which co-operated the Champions League T20 (CLT20) along with Cricket Australia (CA) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that the league is all set to be discontinued from this year onwards.
The decision was taken in a CLT20 Governing Council (GC) meeting, which also had representatives from CA and CSA along with the BCCI members. It comes out as a unanimous decision by all the stake holders to scrap off the CLT20. And thus the CLT20 2015 earlier scheduled for September and October, 2015 will not be played.
CLT20 never received the warmth it was expected to attract, the crowds which were already at satiety after 45 days of non-stop T20 action with the IPL, did not fill in for the Champions league games which were on times played between two neutral T20 teams from abroad. Since it was growing on as a financial liability the decision to discontinue was the best available option with the stake holders.
Mr. Anurag Thakur, Honorary Secretary of the BCCI said in a statement on the bcci.tv: “This has been a difficult decision as the Champions League T20 provided added context to a number of domestic Twenty 20 competitions around the world such as the IPL in India, Big Bash League in Australia and South Africa’s Ram Slam T20. ”
“It was a fantastic platform for players from around the world to showcase their talent and the participating teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience over the last six seasons. He said.
“Unfortunately, off the field, Champions League T20 wasn’t sustaining the interest of the fans as we had hoped.
Thakur further added that, “This decision was made, after consultation with all our commercial partners and meeting the contractual obligations of all parties involved.
“The Governing Council would like to thank everyone involved with the CLT20 and all those who participated in the tournament.
“Further details associated with winding down the league including settling with the three nations that had invested time and effort in the competition, will be completed very soon”. He said.
