BCCI CEO Rahul Johri asked to leave via mail for leaking confidential information
A BCCI functionary said that maybe Rahul was a little overconfident after he was freed from sexual harassment charges against him.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to part ways with its first-ever Chief Executive Officer Rahul Johri. The board finally accepted the long-pending resignation of Johri on Thursday as he was asked to leave his position of CEO via an email by the authorities. Though Johri had earlier tendered his resignation, he was asked to continue till 2021 due to his capabilities of dealing with ICC matters.
However, the current office-bearers have now asked him to leave due to the leak of the confidential financial information. A board official said that BCCI believes in utmost transparency in its functioning and the breach of the same has resulted in Rahul Johri being outcasted from his position.
As quoted by Outlook India, a board official said, “He has been informed of the decision by email. He had resigned earlier and was asked to continue in the interim. However, the leak of confidential financial information of a bid that was being prepared accelerated the decision. Highest levels of confidentiality are expected when any bid takes place in an organization.”
“This was considered to be scandalous and had the potential to compromise the bid. Financial matters if you cannot keep confidential, then it is a serious lapse that cannot be excused, especially with the new BCCI,” the official added.
Rahul Johri was little overconfident: BCCI functionary
A BCCI functionary said that maybe Rahul was a little overconfident after he was freed from sexual harassment charges against him. He added that also a person who was accused of something so serious can’t be appropriate for a role which deals with promoting Women’s cricket in the country.
“Maybe he was a little overconfident. He was able to survive despite his earlier conduct and there was an enquiry into allegations of sexual harassment against him. The reports of which were not even made available to the complainants which was found to be very surprising. Yet, he was asked to undergo gender sensitisation.
“We felt that to have a CEO who has undergone this punishment was not appropriate for a role which requires you to give a fillip to women’s cricket. And as CEO he had to meet market leaders. He is certainly not the man who is capable of leading India towards the resumption of cricket. The female cricketers and women working in BCCI must be feeling relieved,” the functionary told
Rahul Johri was accused of being involved in sexual harassment by two women in 2018. However, a five-member probe panel appointed by the Supreme Court, Committee of Administrators (CoA), had given a clean chit to Johri. Though two members of the panel namely Diana Edulji and Veena Dowda demanded the resignation of Rahul and recommended a “gender sensitivity counselling” for him, the final verdict was passed in his favour due to the majority decision.
After his resignation, Diana Edulji expressed her happiness on this decision taken by BCCI stating that the justice has finally prevailed and the Women cricketers can now be relieved.
