There have been constant talks with regards to managing the workload of the Indian players given the amount of cricket that they play these days. Recently, senior players were given rest for the ongoing Nidahas Trophy 2018; the ones who were constantly on road in the past six months or so. In a bid to monitor the workload of the players, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen on introducing certain amendments in the contracts signed by the players with their respective franchises for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The take to avoid the burnout for the players especially bowlers seems more prominent given the foreign players who are always capped to bowl a certain number of overs as mentioned in the NOC’s issued by the foreign boards to allow them to play in the league here in India.
Move to protect the bowlers
The board’s recent attempt is to protect the players from excessive load given all the Indian players are a key to any franchise, “The board will soon have a clause where a contracted bowler with the BCCI will have limitations on how much he can bowl in the nets. The respective franchises will be informed once the proper paperwork is completed,” a BCCI official said. Although there isn’t an official confirmation of the same by the board it is certain that the respective franchise will be conveyed the information.
“The paper is yet to be formalised as the board will be looking at adding it as an additional clause in the contracts between players and franchises. It’s a move that has being considered to protect our players from burnout. They are anyway coming off a heavy workload while playing for India and with a hectic calendar ahead,” a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
Seniors’ say on the need of timely rest
The Indian skipper, Virat Kohli who is one among those given due rest, has his say on the much-needed break that the body demands after being in action for such a long time. At a promotional event in Mumbai, he said, “Physically, I had a few niggles, I am just getting over those. The workload has started to disagree with me a little bit. I have to be very careful about how I go forward with my body, my mind, my cricket.”
