After a not so impressive outing in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League, Mohammed Shami was faced with another issue – that of not clearing the yo-yo fitness test, which led to him being kept out of the one-off Test against Afghanistan. But only a few days ago, Shami, after putting in a lot of hard work, cleared the test and is now hopeful to be named in the Test squad to face England.

What makes Shami’s chances in the squad likely is the fact that Jasprit Bumrah is nursing an injury and is likely to be left out of the series. As per media reports, the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) are focusing on conditioning Shami’s international return. That he is under mental stress, after several allegations put by his wife publicly, it is being argued that Shami should take some more time before playing at the highest level under any mental strain.

A very capable bowler, says Indian team management

But a member of Indian team management has confirmed that Shami is ready to give in his all to Indian cricket. “He’s very clear in his mind that he’s going to put his heart and soul into not just sorting out his personal life but also making sure he meets all demands required of international cricket. Given the bowler he is, there’s a lot he is capable of going forward,” TOI learnt from a member of Indian team management.

The person also added that they will try their best to sort out Shami’s legal issues as well, so that he can fully concentrate on cricket and utilise his skills to the fullest.

“We’ll try and see wherever we can help him. It’s important from his career point of view and even from a team perspective because there’s so much he brings to Indian cricket,” mentioned the team management.

Shami is preferred over other bowlers in the team mainly because of his experience and of course, talent as well. India play England in five Tests beginning on August 1.
