BCCI opposes Rahul Johri's decision to travel to Windies for Kohli's feedback on coach appointment
Johri will reach the Caribbean on Wednesday and will meet Virat.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rahul Johri is expected to be travelling to the West Indies to have a word with India skipper Virat Kohli regarding the appointment of the next head coach for Team India.
However, latest development in the news has it that the Indian board has questioned Johri’s need to travel overseas to get Kohli’s feedback when MV Sridhar, General Manager of Cricket Operations and Kapil Malhotra, manager of the team are already there and can themselves do the talking with Kohli and inform the board about its proceedings.
It is reported that a senior BCCI official told them that Johri travelling to Jamaica makes no sense. The CEO is scheduled to reach the Caribbean by Wednesday and have a talk with the Indian skipper. Kohli had earlier said that if the Indian board deems it important to ask for his feedbacks, he would openly air his views.
“I have no idea why Johri is headed to West Indies for a meeting with the captain. Does that mean that Kohli is not comfortable discussing the team’s take on the next India coach with Sridhar or Malhotra? Also, there is always something call tele-conferencing. If the decision to appoint BCCI officials as managers is considered as a way of pleasing members of state associations, doesn’t the decision to send Johri all the way also raise eyebrows? Strange how everything the COA decides is fine,” the official told Cricketnext.
The coach mystery to end soon
Meanwhile, with the backing of Kohli, BCCI officials and also veterans like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, it seems likely that former team director Ravi Shastri will become the next coach of the team. Among other frontrunners are also Virender Sehwag and Tom Moody but Shastri for several reasons can be given precedence over them. The new coach will be appointed before the tour to Sri Lanka scheduled for later this month.
