The legal trouble for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) co-owner Ness Wadia could also lead to problems for the team. Wadia was sentenced to two years of jail by a Japan court following his arrest during holidaying. Later, the punishment was suspended for five years. Wadia’s arrest came in the wake of him possessing drugs – about 25 grams of cannabis resin – even though he said that it was for his personal use.

The Wadia incident could spell trouble for the Kings for the operational rules of the IPL say that no team official can act in a manner that brings disrepute to the team, tournament, the board or the game on or off the turf. If one is found guilty, the consequences could even be the suspension of the team. KXIP are still in the chase to make the playoffs in the ongoing Indian Premier League and will meet Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a make-or-break game in Mohali on Friday.

KXIP notified on the case

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already considered revoking Wadia’s IPL accreditation following his arrest. The matter will come up at the discussion of the Committee of Administrators that runs the board in New Delhi on Friday. The Indian Express quoted sources to say that an email has already been sent to the KXIP seeking clarification in the Wadia case.

“A notice has been sent to Kings XI Punjab after media report came of Wadia being convicted for drugs in Japan. We have asked Kings XI Punjab to clarify the issue with COA and then the board will take a call on it,” the daily said quoting the sources.

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, who had accused Wadia of ill-treatment in the past, is also one of the co-owners of the franchise and remains quite attached to the team through its journey. KXIP had made the final of the tournament in 2014 when they lost to the KKR in the final.
