A couple of days ago the head coach of the Indian cricket team Anil Kumble resigned from his post. But it was not that the news was a total surprise. In the recent past, Kumble hasn’t been on the same page with Indian skipper Virat Kohli. The tension was rising in the dressing room and the resignation came as the aftermath of the cold war.
Virat Kohli, the most popular cricketer in the world in the current era, is known for his passion towards the game and aggressive attitude. He is not one of the calmest cricketers in the field, as the former Indian skipper Kumble was. As per reports, Kohli and his pack of players were not ready to accept the authoritarian-like attitude of the head coach.
Kumble also carried out some hard practice regimes, like taking 50 catches a day for the overall betterment of Indian team. But the players felt that his training regime is too hard to follow. Reportedly, the players were feeling the dearth of individual independence in the dressing room.
Kohli is the king
Unable to continue in the tensed environment anymore, Kumble decided to quit. But now, a lot of former Indian cricketers are questioning BCCI’s role. They feel that the Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI) is succumbing to the ego of the Delhi lad. Former Indian skippers like Sunil Gavaskar and Bishan Singh Bedi have questioned whether the next coach in line will be able to bear with the skipper’s tantrums or not.
“There’s often a lack of transparency and professionalism in what the BCCI does. I think players today consider themselves to be above a lot of things, because of IPL and everything it brings about. They don’t believe in the work ethics of someone like Kumble,” said former Indian spinner Maninder Singh.
Apparently, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, is also not liking Kohli’s indulgence in the selection of new head coach. Hence, the questions are circulating for obvious reasons, “Is BCCI succumbing to the ego of the skipper?” “Shall not BCCI take a step to keep Kohli‘s tantrums in check?”
