BCCI to bid for 2025 Champions Trophy, 2028 T20 and 2031 ODI WC in the next cycle of events

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be bidding to host three upcoming ICC events in the next cycle starting from 2024 for eight years. The decision was taken at the board’s emergent Apex Council Meeting which held virtually recently. Recently, ICC reinstated the Champions Trophy which last took place in 2017 when Pakistan defeated India in the final.

Along with it, the ICC has taken care that there is at least a single global event taking place every year from 2024. The BCCI seems to be very confident of hosting the World Cups now after successfully co-hosting the 50-over WC and hosting the 2016 T20 WC alone. They are planning to now bid for hosting of the 2025 Champions Trophy, 2028 T20 World Cup and 2031 ODI World Cup.

“Yes, we would be bidding for the 2025 Champions Trophy along with 2028 T20 World Cup and the 2031 50-over World Cup. The Apex Council has agreed on this, in principle,” a senior BCCI official said according to Yahoo News.

India should be capable of hosting world event every 2 or 3 years, says official

India are the hosts of the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in October-November later this year. However, it isn’t yet sure if the tournament will be played in India due to the COVID-19 threat. Moreover, the country is also slated to host the 2023 ODI World Cup and the BCCI official reckoned that it will be perfect for them to play hosts to the Champions Trophy a couple of years later.

“The Champions Trophy is a short tournament but is an immensely popular one. It was only fair that after the 2023 World Cup in India, we bid for the 2025 Champions Trophy. India should be in a position to host a global event every two to three years and hence we are bidding for three events,” the official further added.

ICC has decided to increase the teams in the next cycle for the global events. While the 50-over World Cup will have 14 teams, the mega event in the shortest format will see 20 teams battling it out for the glory.
